Doctor's Notes: Dysmenorrhea, What Is It?

August 10, 2015

Periodically our doctor, Dr. Robert Lawler, will be sharing some of his notes on topics for you! They will be shared here on our website as well on our Facebook Page. Enjoy!

First topic: Dysmenorrhea by Dr. Robert C. Lawler, M.D.

What is it?
Dysmenorrhea is the presence of painful cramping sensation just prior to and during menstruation. It can be accompanied by other symptoms such as headache, bloating, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. It conservatively affects 75% of women to varying degrees, with 15% reporting significant disruption of normal activity. This leads to missed days at school and work, with a significant economic impact

Primary dysmenorrhea typically follows menarche once ovulation is established and does not relate to any underlying pathology, it is thought to be a response of the uterus to elevated prostaglandin F-2 alpha levels.

Secondary dysmenorrhea typically occurs later in life, and is associated with some underlying pathology, such as endometriosis, pelvic infection, cervical, stenosis.

As we continue these Doctor's Notes, if you have questions on what you read here, or on any other topic, please feel free to contact our office and make an appointment: 630.541.7788.
